The banana boat

Like the Love Boat before it, the banana boat has connotations of romance and wistful luxury. Yet you can achieve this in the wilderness with nothing more than a piece of fruit, chocolate, tinfoil and a campfire.

The trick is to slice into the banana without cutting through to your palm, then get right into the core of it with all the goodies. You can’t really overdo it here. And whatever warnings I give you aren’t going to stop you cramming in as much chocolate as you can anyway, so I say go for it.

Seal it up by wrapping tightly in tin foil and throw in the embers for ten minutes or so. Don’t burn yourself getting it out. Obviously. Flicking it out with a stick always works well and can be as much fun as eating the finished product.

Once you’ve mastered the basic banana boat then you can start to get decadent. Marshmallows, nuts, you can even top it off with whipped cream or condensed milk if that’s the way you camp. The opportunities are boundless, just like a Caribbean sunset.

So now you’re done. The embers are glowing, your tummy’s full. You’ve overcome all the dramas: burnt fingers, stab wounds, a fight with the tinfoil that seemed like it would never end. Life is good again.
